The Resonance of the Amphitheater’s Sound

12.2 spatial-sound installation / impro sound performance

ISPOD BINE, sound art festival, Youth Center (Dom mladih), Split, Croatia, November 6 – 9, 2024

The Resonance of the Amphitheater’s Sound builds upon the previous work Resonance of the Sound (Grič Tunnel, 2021). Due to its technical and conceptual features, this new artistic project draws inspiration from the works of one of the most significant experimental music composers, Alvin Lucier—specifically Music on a Long Thin Wire (1977) and I Am Sitting in a Room (1969/1970).

The piece is a multi-channel spatial-sound installation located in the amphitheater of the Youth Center (Dom Mladih) in Split. On the amphitheater stage, there are 12 speakers arranged in a circle and two subwoofers. A 52-meter-long wire is stretched across the entire space, acting as an instrument. The wire is activated by an electromagnet that transmits a sum of sounds from the 14-channel installation. Using pickup and piezo microphones, the wire’s sound feedback is fed into the SuperCollider software, where further manipulation and distribution to the 12.2 speaker system occur.

The monumental space of the amphitheater, with its unique acoustic properties, becomes a resonant instrument in which the work is realised. An additional microphone is placed in the space as a third source, which is also subject to software manipulation and merges with the overall soundscape. The stage boards are equipped with contact microphones, enabling visitors to intervene in the soundscape through their movements, acting as a fourth audio source within the system.

In collaboration with invited musicians (Hrvoje Pelicarić, Jeronim Jandrić, Gildo Bavčević and Rob Mazurek), an improvised sound performance lasting approximately one hour is conducted.

This iteration of the work was realised in collaboration with sound designer and multimedia artist Hrvoje Pelicarić, produced by MAVENA association. It continues on an earlier research and art project developed in collaboration with Hannes Hölzl, SuperCollider software developer, electroacoustic engineer Miodrag Gladović, musicologist Davorka Begović and curators of the KONTEJNER association Ena Hodžić and Tereza Teklić. The first version of the work was commissioned and produced by KABEL in cooperation with the KONTEJNER association as part of the Re-Imagine Europe project, co-financed by the European Union through the Creative Europe program
